American Thanksgiving

American Thanksgiving

It was my very first time experiencing Thanksgiving in America and let me tell you, they take it so seriously. The whole city shuts down, the people empty out and the trains obviously cause inconvenience to those trying to get to turkey dinners.
This is the time of year - too close to Christmas dinner for my liking - that you absolutely need to plan your dinner outfit accordingly.
Wearing something stretchy and nothing too tight or 'body revealing' is always a great idea.
It was a very long 4 day weekend full of food, wine and much laughter :)

nanna biscuits

I already got incredibly lucky receiving a Frankie Magazine in my mail box this month and now a yummy baking book published by Frankie Magazine has arrived!
I had wanted this during my time in Australia and decided not to buy it because I couldn't lug it to India with me. Thanks to the lovely Miss Todd, I've been baking up a storm.
Peter and I made these Nanna biscuits and my 'hand out' birthday cupcakes out of the recipe for the peppermint chocolate cake.
YUM

The Guggenheim

It was a lovely way to spend 5:45-7:45pm on a Saturday in Manhattan.
During this time, the museum fee is by donation. The line up was far longer than expected for such frigid weather but did move quickly and beats paying $15.
I thought the museum was just beautiful and adored walking up and down it's winding walk way.
You really don't even have to like the art to love this place:)

knitted slippers

I wanted to make them look a little more like high tops, however, they turned out looking a little more like ballet slippers:)

Snap Snap

When Peter asked me what I wanted for my birthday I requested maybe trying to get a few 'vintage feel' pictures that I could have for when I'm old and grey and want to look myself in the younger (25) years.
Peter rented an old camera and i had to hold one pose for what seemed like 30 minutes. He would disappear under the black sheet to focus it and reappear to tell me not to breathe or it would blur.
It was a touch exhausting and I was sleepy by the end of it. However, the polaroids turned out great in the end:)

A Spike Lee collaboration, makes you feel very proud drinking something tasty like this in Brooklyn.
I'm a sucker for creative packaging and design - had to buy it!

New York Matches

Worth paying a little bit more at Catbird to get these fabulously packaged matches.

Brooklyn Flea Market

Possibly the most beautiful and exciting flea market I've been to yet.
It's held every Sunday in the Williamsburg Savings Bank, ironically not located in Williamsburg.

The building is fantastic! Stain glass windows, colourful ceilings and vaults as doorways. They also had lovely toilets, which was a bonus.

Besides vintage clothes and local jewelery designers, there's antique furniture, unique bedding and home accessories. The prices were shockingly reasonable.

Through the bank vaults and down the stairs is the adorable food court with trendy local sellers. I decided I'm not rich enough for $15 lobster rolls and so went for the Mahi Mahi grilled fish taco for $5.  It was worth every penny, hummming and ahhhhming at every bite!
I was browsing through a rack of clothes, seriously considering an 80's sweater with all kinds of embellishments on it, when I was startled by a swede.  Turned out to be three Swedish men, impeccably dressed of course-that's how you know there from Sweden!
They had a camera pointed at me and were asking me if I wouldn't mind a quick interview for H&M tv. I said 'i'm shy' and then with a few kind words of encouragement, just went along, why not.
They were the kind of questions that had to be answered carefully not to sound like a complete pretentious tit. I'm pretty sure I didn't pull off avoiding that and am slightly nervous to see the video.
Some of the questions were things like: "What inspires your fashion?" and "What advice would you give to those looking to wear vintage clothing?"
How can you not sound ridiculous answering those questions!? ha
All answers went back to my mom's closet from the past of course, which I was wearing head to toe.
They then followed me around for a while. I said I was kind of shy about that part and so the swedish film guy promised me I wouldn't notice him.
The problem was, I didn't notice him and continued my shopping. I was fluffing my puffy skirt, pulling ugly shopping faces and searching for Peter in all of the vintage picture sections.
My new $3 dress that I sifted out of a box at the market

Peter had fantastic luck picking through some boxes of vintage pictures. He found some amazing treasures of someones trip to Panama. We assume the pictures were shot in Panama because it's written on a sign in the exotic background. Have no idea what date they would be but everyone looks very happy and it seems to have been a cruise.
He did a little bargaining and got them all for $5.

Coney Island

After an hour underground on the train from Greenpoint, we reached Coney Island just in time to eat the lunch I packed for us.  Peter was a little disappointed this meant he would be missing out on trying all of the greasy food Coney Island offers. (He got some a few hours later anyways)
Lucky for us, the weather was incredible and we spent most of the afternoon napping on a bench facing the ocean, soaking up the sun. It's always when Winter is fast approaching that I appreciate the sun the most.
Coney Island was interesting. It was colourful and tacky and home to many people who looked like they part took in the hot dog eating contest that the place is famous for.
Needless to say, thank goodness the sun was shining and that it was just a day trip :)
