Personal learning time!
The education system in Victoria, Australia has recently introduced "structured play" to their curriculum. It reminds me a lot of the Reggio Emilia philosophy on learning. However, instead of a whole approach, one a hour day is dedicated to this creative time.
There is a craft corner where the teacher models what they could create during the hour. There is a Pharmacy set up for real life role play, a building corner for builders to make draft drawings and then begin their construction, a reading corner for some quiet time and lots of extra little activities spread across the area.
It is called 'personal learning' because the children decide what they want to learn about.
It is structured because there is a daily focus the children must think about while they create, design, interact and learn.
Each day there are two focus children chosen for the teacher to watch closely and assess. There is one child who acts as a reporter, writing down activities their friends are engaging in. There is also a child photographer who collects visual evidence of the work the class is creating or participating in.

"Miss Wilson....in Australia we call it wool"
This is my favourite simply because the little boy who created it was excited to give it to his sister and mum. He and his sister live at the same foster home and see their mother together once a week during a supervised visit. He was so excited to give this to her, with her black hair and rainbow frock.
I think the buttons on this one is fabulous! Creative idea and was not part of the picture I modelled to the children.
I love that all of the lessons on shapes have been paying off. This child used a triangle to make a hat!
These flowers were picked during playtime and I think they put an elegant touch to the simplistic work.
